THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Philippines which is geared towards globalization must have an educational system which conforms to the trends of the outside world and shall provide classroom situations which are not only limited to memorization of facts, but situation which train the students to answer the demands of the real world. Burbules et al1 had stated that the global context presents a fundamentally different sort of challenge to education. Different sort of challenges to education shall be more than just enlightenment framework. Importance of enlightenment education remains ephemeral, compromised by mobility and competition with other sources of affiliation including what can be termed as “imaginary community.”
Matthirulandhi2 had opined that the preparation for and involvement in life and not mere globalization is the educational need in post-industrial society of the present. To meet the challenges of accelerated change and uncertainty, learners need to acquire appropriate knowledge skills and intellectual capacity. New knowledge and skills are needed to compete, survive and prosper in the 21st century, which is the age of techno-scientific revolution in order for the learners to be fit in the workplace. The present traditional pattern of education seems not to answer the need for the future, which may lead to the most explosive problems of discontent and frustration of graduate employment. A new learning culture, a culture of lifelong learning for all must be developed by countries. This culture is essential to help the country and all the people meet the challenges they now face in the wake of Globalization, Liberalization, and Privatization
Various studies consulted by the researcher recommended that the teachers should include tasks, which involve students, in order to improve student’s performance. The researcher had seen an array of different teaching methods studied, which range from cooperative learning to modular approach in teaching to improve the way student are taught and to determine their effectiveness. Included in the findings of these researches is that learning is enhanced when students become actively involved in the leaning processes. Indeed the need to use student-centered teaching methods is a requirement that should be considered by teachers in planning their lessons.
Bolivar et al, 3stated that in order to have effective classroom interaction, science teachers must be knowledgeable enough in planning and using non-human resources. Making teaching meaningful to students can be hard for teachers, especially that there is no single effective approach in teaching; teachers must be creative and resourceful. Moreover, Ceperez4 added that teachers must prioritize the development of higher cognitive skills and emphasis on science as a process must be taken into consideration, making it important that teachers must execute sound plan and careful selection of strategies to use.
Authentic learning tasks, which require students to demonstrate skills and competencies that realistically, represent problems and situation likely to be encountered in daily life5 seems to fit the criteria, which can answer the need of globalization. Moreover, students may be able to acquire more skills after the instruction can be directly seen, since the students are asked not only to choose in a set of options but to perform or demonstrate what he had learned.
Wiggins6 had stated that authentic learning strategies always come with authentic learning assessment tools which require the student to be effective performers with acquired knowledge. It present the student with full array of tasks that mirror the priorities and challenges found in the best instructional activities. On the other hand, traditional assessments tend to reveal only whether the student can recognize recall or “plug in” what was learned out of context but unfortunately the teacher is not yet sure if the student who passed the paper and pencil test can apply what they had learned to daily life. According to Guba et.al7, in traditional assessments, meaningful application in complex real world situation is seen very indirect by scores in the paper and pencil test and does not effectively measure students capabilities. A good assessment shall not only measure a representative of what the student had learned but it should examine student collective abilities8. We can infer from the foregoing statement that test results cannot really measure the totality of skills the students acquire in the learning process. Students are expected to master the skills expected after the lesson, which make it imperative that an assessment tool which measures the majority if not the total concepts learned is a great need.
This research will determine the authentic learning tasks in biology used in selected private and public schools in Daraga, Albay. Moreover, this will determine the difficulties encountered by science teachers in using such strategy. This will also determine the authentic assessment tools which accompanies the authentic learning tasks used by teachers of Daraga, Albay.
The National Achievement Test (NAT) Results in 2006, 9 revealed that Bicol Region was one of the region who performed very poor in the test, ranking fifth place out of the 17 participating regions. Daraga, Albay is part of Bicol Region, and it goes that it contributed to the low performance rating of the region.
Maligalig et al10 opined that to measure the quality of education perhaps the best indicators are those achievement test rate for major achievement tests that were administered in the secondary level. The results stated above are the indicator of the poor quality of basic education. Lack of competent teachers who are the primary resource for Elementary and Secondary students in lieu of books and other learning materials can be one of the problems. The slight decline in the National Achievement test results is alarming to think that one of the missions of education is to produce productive citizens and being productive can be hard especially when in school, which is the training ground of the people, they have not mastered the skills expected to them.
Since we are geared towards globalization, students which will be the future citizens of the society must be trained in accordance with what is the need to become productive citizens. Authentic assessment is one of the method which seems to answer the need, making it imperative to study this strategy in order to know its effectiveness so that teachers has the basis in order to facilitate the use of this strategy.
New strategies and practices such as authentic assessment must be carefully studied before planning for change. This research seeks to explore the extent by which authentic assessment tools and strategies are used by biology teachers in Daraga, Albay, will determine the difficulties encountered by the teachers in using them and shall propose resource material which uses authentic learning strategies. The situations stated above highlights the need to study this strategy to help achieve the mission of the most educational institution which is to develop productive citizen.
Statement of the Problem
This study entitled “Authentic Learning Tasks and the Performance of Second-year Students of DNHS,” aims to answer the following sub-problems
1. What is the performance of the students in the pretest?
2. What is the effect of Authentic Learning tasks in terms of:
A. Studnets performance in biology as shown in the posttest
B. Student’s attitude towards biology?
2. What is the effect of Authentic learning tasks and authentic assessment tools used by biology teachers in Daraga National High School?
4. What resource materials can be proposed that use authentic learning tasks?

Scope and Delimitation
This study aims to determine the effectiveness of authentic learning tasks in enchancing the performance of the students of DNHS. The respondents of this study are the students of secondary schools of Daraga, Albay. The researcher shall include only to rwo sections among the 15 second-year section the school has. Other schools found in Daraga, Albay will not be included. Moreover, other teachers teaching science subjects such as Chemistry and Physics is excluded in this study.
The researcher will be employing descriptive methods of research, which on its own has weakness; this undertaking will not cover other teaching strategies.
Significance of the Study
This study will not only be of help to quench the researcher’s curiosity, this will also help the following:
Students. The real-world experience that will be provided by the teachers shall make them an individual who does not just store information, a passive learner, but somebody who is deeply involve in the learning process, making them ready for the challenges of the real world
Teachers. This study may inspire them to improve the way they teach the students and can provide a sound basis for them to see the relevance of such method in improving student’s performance. Moreover, the findings of this study can be used as a guide in facilitating their teaching as they reach the goal of producing productive citizens. The resource materials that can be devised by the researcher can be used by them teachers to determine for themselves the effectiveness of the method being studied.
Community. A community which has carefully and critically trained individuals will be able to have productive environment. Students in the school, who are well-trained, shall be the stewards in achieving a well-developed community.
Department of Education. This will inspire them to revise the curriculum by incorporating authentic learning task if this strategy is found to be an effective teaching method.
Researchers. Since the nature of their work is more on providing information, they can use the findings and other parts of this study, which they found relevant in whatever purpose this study will serve the need.

“To see is to believe,” the popular adage goes. But what if you don’t have the eyes to see things clearly, would you still believe? Or will you let other people make you believe?
In this world where deceiving things abound everywhere, a single blink of an eye can mislead you to reality, what more if you can’t see these deceiving things.
Everybody wants to have a great vision, but why will you dream of a good vision if you can have a great one; while keeping up with the laws of “fashion world.” The major question now is where to find an eyeglass that suits you fashion sense and at the same time appropriate for your eye defect.
Wow, that may seem a difficult question, but not when I has known about this web-based optical centre site(High Five to Zenni Optical), that answered my question. I am a teacher in an institution that geared towards promoting and honing the students to become great persons and responsible citizens of the society in the future. I am not a perfect teacher, nor a compassionate one but I know how it is to mingle and when to have a bond with the students, I also know when is the right time to laugh or to cry with them, but when the time comes when my patience was lost that is the time when I have to practice controlling myself and at the same time controlling my facial expression (since I look worst whenever I am angry).
If you wanted be a teacher you need to be kind. I recall during my high school years the laws of scouts. I forced myself to memorize all of the virtues that a scout should have and attain; I even made a checklist, so that I can monitor the things where I do good and those things that I should care.
Huh!!, it very tiring to be a teacher aside from the fact tat you have make a lesson plan you also have to conform to the norms of society on teachers, it mind racking and at the same time, facial deforming since you have to look great at the worst and has to stay calm during the most difficult times since you are being looked upon by the students.
Aside from the fact that you have to teach a group of children the basic facts of life, and things that concerns their existence you also have to teach them the lessons that concerns their lives and are not written thoroughly in the book. Moreover, you have to be an epitome of all things that you are teaching since, all of the things that you are teaching will be nothing but a rotten cake if all of the things you are preaching will be thrown to waste.
But if you are very lonely and does not have money to buy a ticket on KTV’s to listen to the jokes of the performers, I advice that you enter in the teaching profession. Most of the time in the classroom, you will end up farting all night because of the crazy that will cause a boisterous laughter.
Teaching profession is tiring job, but the duty to teach the children and to care for the future are my motivation. Teachers are like farmers that produce great products to ensure that the people will be healthy; teachers are the farmers of the present that builds great mind today for a better future

I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I AM NOT POOR, YES! I AM NOT POOR!!!!! Because I am very poor. I may not be the most richest man in the world but I am the most HANDSOME PERSON EVER LIVED HERE ON EARTH, as far as my standard is concern… this is my philosophy that I do not erase in my mind, because if I will I will end up failing. Since I have no one to call on in times of my saddest hour to share my problems with nor anybody to boost my emotional system in my darkest hours.
I am not a perfect friend but I enjoy when I am in the company of my friends in their saddest hour. I always remind them that whenever they need emotional help, they can always reach me, I may not be a good adviser at least I know how to listen, I may not be an expert on it but at least I have ears that is function, and I know how to listen sincerely.
I failed more than a thousand times, and I am very thankful with that failure since because of it, I look like a well- made figurine that has a very smooth design, yes, I have to admit that I still have flaws but not as worst as it was before.

I am a little exhausted with the day that had gone. I just don’t know when the time will come when I will be loved. I am ashamed to admit that nobody had loved me back. Indeed it is a very shameful thing but that’s the truth so I have to be proud of it. Anyway there are very few people who experience the same thing I am experiencing right now, at least I am unique.
When I was in high school I dreamt of a woman to love, actually I love that person so much but because I can’t fit to her standard, on February 2005 I had received a from the woman I love most that all of my efforts will just be wasted so it would be better for me to stop. I cried all night, and when the morning comes, I pretend that it is alright that nothing happened.
Huh, that was one of the worst time in my life, and the worst thing is there is no one to boost my confidence, that why I only got boos! From the people around me, but I am very thankful to that person because if not with her I will not graduate Cum Laude, she was my motivation for me to graduate with flying colors, if ever you had red this Salamat talaga. If only I was able to fit to your standard, or if I have a strong potion will use just for you to love me.
I am very thankful that she is happy with her life now, from now on I will stop loving anybody, I don’t want another failure, I’m afraid that I will not be able to go on with my life as normal person with another failure in love, but failure in life is still welcome, but love will not be recognized anymore by my heart because I know that whoever will be that person who will love me, I hope will be true.
In all of these there is only ONE who had never leave my side in my battle. HE had accepted me to even if I look thanks BRO.

Welcome to the first annual Wired News rundown of the year's 10 most important scientific breakthroughs. 2007 was an amazing year for science. Unlike recent years, there were no high-profile cases of scientific fraud -- none that went uncovered, anyway. Journal publishers took extra care, requiring scientists to duplicate results in an effort to avoid scientific, not to mention public relations, fiascoes. And while those are entertaining, we'll take solid science over Sturm und Drang any day. Here we count down the top 10 scientific discoveries that rocked our Wired world the hardest this year.
10. Transistors Get Way Smaller
In the race to make computers faster, chipmakers rely on exotic new materials. In January, Intel announced that the element hafnium and some new metal alloys will allow them to make the millions of switches on their microprocessors far smaller. Gordon Moore, co-founder of the company and father of the law that bears his name, called it the biggest change in transistor technology since the 1960s. The tremendous accomplishment allows Intel to squeeze features on each chip down to 45 nanometers from the current standard of 65 nanometers. But the greatest benefit may be an increase in energy efficiency. That improvement comes along with the hafnium alloys that will prevent electricity from leaking across the tiny switches.
Intel started using the technology, codenamed Penryn, in November in high-end servers. Home users can expect the chips in early 2008.
9. Scientists Clone Rhesus Monkey to Produce Stem Cells
At Oregon Health and Science University, Shoukhrat Mitalipov and his team cloned a Rhesus Monkey and used the resulting embryo to create stem cells. Until then, the impressive feat had been performed only with mice.
In November, the team reported in Nature a surprising key to their success: avoiding ultraviolet light and dyes -- tools that are almost always used in cloning experiments -- because they can damage delicate cells.
Stem cells could be used to repair nearly any damaged organ, but they are useless if they upset the immune system. By cloning sick patients and using cells derived from their own bodies, doctors could skirt problems similar to those experienced by people with organ transplants. But some say the No. 1 discovery on our list makes cloning unnecessary. Nonetheless, some scientists, including stem-cell researchers at Harvard, say cloning is still necessary.
8. Planet Discovered That Could Harbor Life
Astrobiology enthusiasts have had many reasons to rejoice this year, but one of them has been somewhat controversial. After Stéphane Udry and his colleagues found a pair of planets that they believed could harbor life, other researchers disputed which of the two is most habitable, but agreed that the distant solar system is worthy of further study.
Using a Canadian space telescope and the European Southern Observatory in Chile, Udry inferred that the most promising object is slightly larger than earth, circles its sun in 18 days, and may be rocky. In a late April issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the University of Geneva professor provided details about his sophisticated search. Both of the celestial bodies orbit the red dwarf star Gliese 581, which is only 20 light years from earth. Although prospects for the two planets may be less hopeful than Udry and his associates projected, the methods that they used to locate the small planet could be used to make many more discoveries.
7. Engineers Create Transparent Material as Strong as Steel
Engineering researchers at the University of Michigan have created a material similar to "transparent aluminum," the fantastic substance described by Scotty in Star Trek IV. In the Oct. 5 issue of Science, Nicholas Kotov showed that clay is good for far more than making bricks and expensive skincare products. The earthen material is made up of phenomenally strong nanometer-sized particles. When arranged neatly between thin layers of a sticky but weak plastic, the tiny bits of dirt act as the ultimate reinforcements -- giving the ordinary material extraordinary strength. The sturdy composite could be used in lightweight armor or aircraft.
6. Soft Tissue from T. Rex Leg Bone Analyzed
This spring, the oldest patient in the pathology department of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston was a 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex. For the first time, scientists have analyzed biological molecules from the ancient creatures. Working with soft tissue from a leg bone that was extremely well-preserved in prehistoric Montana sediments, John Asara read the chemical recipe of a protein that served as a springy structural element in the dinosaur's bones. In the April 13 issue of Science, he and his colleagues compared the deadly predator to animals that roam the earth today and concluded that it has a lot in common with chickens.
5. Laboratory Mice Cured of Rett Syndrome
Researchers affiliated with the Wellcome Trust have shown evidence that Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that afflicts one in every 10,000 female births, might be curable. Caused by a mutation, the disorder prevents children from walking, talking or developing normally and gives them terrible tremors. By creating mice with a similar affliction, Adrian Bird and his colleagues at Edinburgh University and the University of Glasgow tested the effects of fixing the bad gene. In the Feb. 23 issue of Science, they explained that the disease does not cause permanent damage to nerve cells, and breathing problems and tremors in mice stop when they are nudged into producing normal MeCP2 -- the protein corrupted by the disease.
4. Enzymes Convert Any Blood Type to O
Several major Type O blood shortages, including crises at the National Institutes of Health this fall and throughout Georgia in late summer, highlight the importance of creating a versatile blood type. In the rare instance that someone receives a transfusion of the wrong type, deadly reactions (caused by sugar molecules on the surfaces of red blood cells) can cause the immune system to go haywire.
In April, Henrik Clausen, a professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, published research in Nature describing a way to convert any kind of blood into Type O -- the type that almost anyone can tolerate. He discovered enzymes that shear the problem-causing sugars from the surfaces of A, B and AB type red blood cells. Produced by bacteria, the molecular machines could theoretically turn any kind of blood into Type O. Clausen and his colleagues described their search for the pacifying proteins in the April 1 issue of Nature Biotechnology.
ZymeQuest, a startup company from Massachusetts, is now developing a device that hospitals can use during blood shortages.
3. Mummified Dinosaur Excavated and Scanned
Paleontologists from England's University of Manchester have excavated the mummy of a nearly intact plant-eating dinosaur. Preserved by minerals for over 65 million years, the petrified body is in such pristine condition that the researchers could see a striped pattern on what remains of its scales. The scientists transported the fossilized hadrosaur this fall to a giant CT scanner in Canoga Park, California, where technicians captured terabytes of 3-D images that have already revealed surprises about the creature's muscle mass and the spacing of its bones. Tyler Lyson, now a graduate student in geology at Yale University, made the initial find seven years ago while fossil hunting in the Hell Creek formation of North Dakota.
2. Chimpanzees Make Spears for Hunting
Two anthropologists watched in mixed amazement and horror as several female chimpanzees crafted spears and used them to somewhat brutally hunt smaller mammals. Following a troop of the primates in a Senegalese savanna, Jill Pruetz of Iowa State University and Paco Bertolani of Cambridge observed them breaking the branches off of trees, picking leaves from the sides, and sharpening the tips to deadly points. In the March edition of Current Biology, the scientists explained that such sophisticated animal behavior could reveal a great deal about how early humans used primitive tools.
1. Researchers Turn Skin Cells to Stem Cells
Using a virus to reprogram skin cells, two teams of scientists managed to skirt the greatest ethical issue facing regenerative medicine -- the destruction of human embryos. Groups led by Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University and Junying Yu of the University of Wisconsin coaxed a type of skin cell called fibroblasts into forming muscle, heart, fat and nerve tissues without using any eggs. Unfortunately, the hijacked cells often became tumors. Following up on his initial discovery this November, Yamanaka told Nature Biotechnology that by inserting three growth genes instead of four, the lab-grown flesh can be controlled without becoming cancerous

During the School Year 2005-2006, with Prof. Ramon Manjares as Principal, the Bicol University Integrated Laboratory School-High School Department developed the right front portion of its Gabaldon Building into a Butterfly garden.
In an environment of hasty succession, preservation, restoration movement is very essential that even schools must carry out actions. This school, as a social group, must take part in this attempt to restore homes of animals and plants. The Butterfly garden is the response of the Bicol University Laboratory School to this call.
Not only did it beautify the surrounding but it also made the students aware of the life and role of the interdependence of flowers and insets and its part in balancing the nature.
Aside from beautification and nature awareness, the Butterfly Garden was also developed for educational purposes. It gives the students the chance to learn the life cycle of a butterfly including their common names and scientific names. Moreover, it provides enjoyment and photo opportunity for students and visitors of the campus. It may also serve as an outlet for artistic talent.
In making the butterfly garden, some pointers were taken into consideration. Butterflies need and enjoy direct sunlight. They also need a place to roost for the night and a place to hibernate. Shelter is important factor in a butterfly’s existence. The spot in front of the Gabaldon Building is exactly the perfect location for a butterfly’s habitat. Breeding is also important for butterflies. In this light, the garden must have flowers as host plants for the female butterfly’s eggs. Likewise, flowers provide butterflies their food.

Living in a world which is more likely to become a world of technology, Science fair is a great way to cope with the rapid progression.
Science fair opens opportunities for students to showcase their efforts in making investigatory projects. It can lead to discovering future inventors and scientist, as well as instruments helpful in our everyday living. It helps students to become productive citizens even at a young age. It serves as an avenue for motivating and developing student’s creativity and talents. In addition, it can be their stepping stone in pursuing their ambitions to become inventors.
Dr. Wilhelmina Ravago had numerous researches that proved relevance of experiments in our agricultural resources and livelihood. Noteworthy examples are those of the Pili shells as added component to floor tiles, the Dieffenbachia picta and Capsicium as rodenticide and the pork and beef talon as additive quality and scented candles. The first investigatory project shows that the pili shells, especially in Bicol, are being used by several manufacturers in making floor tiles. The second investigatory project, the Dumb Cane and Capsicium can be components of pest killers. Their extracts are effective as Dieffenbachia picta and Capsicium frutescene as natural rodenticide. And the third investigatory project concludes that pork and beef talon is being used to make quality and scented candles.
Investigatory Projects anchored with the principle of recycling can be a huge help not just to the industry but also to the nature. This can give our country one big step forward to prosper. It may help those jobless to have jobs and those in need of extra income. It can encourage the youth on engaging their free time in inventing new thing and creating new ideas.
There is lots of invention that the government needs to give attention. Not only here in Bicol but in other places which invention from our native Filipino which will make the government proud and useful to our society. Like this activities and exposure will be a great help to our country and in enhancing our lives. But of course this will be a just idea and useless if we will not use it purposefully.

MATH PUZZLES & TRICKS
Multiply Up to 20X20 In Your Head
In just FIVE minutes you should learn to quickly multiply up to 20x20 in your head. With this trick, you will be able to multiply any two numbers from 11 to 19 in your head quickly, without the use of a calculator.
I will assume that you know your multiplication table reasonably well up to 10x10.
Try this:
• Take 15 x 13 for an example.
• Always place the larger number of the two on top in your mind.
• Then draw the shape of Africa mentally so it covers the 15 and the 3 from the 13 below. Those covered numbers are all you need.
• First add 15 + 3 = 18
• Add a zero behind it (multiply by 10) to get 180.
• Multiply the covered lower 3 x the single digit above it the "5" (3x5= 15)
• Add 180 + 15 = 195.
The 11 Rule
You likely all know the 10 rule (to multiply by 10, just add a 0 behind the number) but do you know the 11 rule? It is as easy! You should be able to do this one in you head for any two digit number. Practice it on paper first!
To multiply any two digit number by 11:
• For this example we will use 54.
• Separate the two digits in you mind (5__4).
• Notice the hole between them!
• Add the 5 and the 4 together (5+4=9)
• Put the resulting 9 in the hole 594. That's it! 11 x 54=594
The only thing tricky to remember is that if the result of the addition is greater than 9, you only put the "ones" digit in the hole and carry the "tens" digit from the addition. For example 11 x 57 ... 5__7 ... 5+7=12 ... put the 2 in the hole and add the 1 from the 12 to the 5 in to get 6 for a result of 627 ... 11 x 57 = 627
Finger Math: 9X Rule

To multiply by 9,try this:
(1) Spread your two hands out and place them on a desk or table in front of you.
(2) To multiply by 3, fold down the 3rd finger from the left. To multiply by 4, it would be the 4th finger and so on.
(3) the answer is 27 ... READ it from the two fingers on the left of the folded down finger and the 7 fingers on the right of it.

This works for anything up to 9x10!
Square a 2 Digit Number Ending in 5

For this example we will use 25
• Take the "tens" part of the number (the 2 and add 1)=3
• Multiply the original "tens" part of the number by the new number (2x3)
• Take the result (2x3=6) and put 25 behind it. Result the answer 625.
Try a few more 75 squared ... = 7x8=56 ... put 25 behind it is 5625.
55 squared = 5x6=30 ... put 25 behind it ... is 3025. Another easy one!
Square 2 Digit Number: UP-DOWN Method
Square a 2 Digit Number, for this example 37:
• Look for the nearest 10 boundary
• In this case up 3 from 37 to 40.
• Since you went UP 3 to 40 go DOWN 3 from 37 to 34.
• Now mentally multiply 34x40
• The way I do it is 34x10=340;
• Double it mentally to 680
• Double it again mentally to 1360
• This 1360 is the FIRST interim answer.
• 37 is "3" away from the 10 boundary 40.
• Square this "3" distance from 10 boundary.
• 3x3=9 which is the SECOND interim answer.
• Add the two interim answers to get the final answer.
• Answer: 1360 + 9 = 1369
Multiply By 4
•
To quickly multiply by four, double the number and then double it again.
Often this can be done in your head.
The distance between the towns A and B is 1000 miles. There is 3000 apples in A, and the apples have to be delivered to B. The available car can take 1000 apples at most. The car driver has developed an addiction to apples: when he has apples aboard he eats 1 apple with each mile made. Figure out the strategy that yields the largest amount of apples to be delivered to B.
There are 6 points in a rectangle with the sides, 3 and 4. Prove that the distance between at least two of these points is smaller than the square root of 5.
A Buddhist monk got an errand from his teacher: to meditate for exactly 45 minutes. He has no watch; instead he is given two inscent sticks, and he is told that each of those sticks would completely burn in 1 hour. You may realize that there is something wrong when you start feeling that there is really something wrong. I’m not fond of horror stories but there is really one thing that chilled me out. When I joined “The Mentor,” they had just moved to their new office.. It was on the third floor of the office of the Admissions Building. It was the former office of the Research Department. It was ok at first. I enjoyed the time when we had changed the over-all appearance of the office and make it homier. Every time we were inside, we feel relaxed, at home. But there is something wrong every time I pass by the second floor. It’s as if somebody’s staring at me or worse, somebody’s walking with me to the third floor.
Meetings are ordinary especially if there is an upcoming event. And in this case, it was the 4th Campus Journalism Skills Training. It was Friday, September 26, 2008. We had to stay in the office overnight. We had rushed on some things needed for the activity the following day. It was fun at first. Everybody’s laughing. It started to happen when the clock struck 12 mn. Earlier, I had to go home to change my clothes. I asked two of my friends, also Mentor staff, to accompany me. When we went back to the office, it was exactly 12mn. We all know that horror stories begin at 12 mn but who gives a crap? I don’t believe in it anyway. But there was something or should I say “someone in that building which can really set your spines chilling. And so we screamed our way to the third floor. Not realizing that maybe, we really did disturb them. We were all laughing when we got into the office. It fired the horror which the other staffers begin to share. I shared my experience in the second floor, in front of the University Registrar. I was looking through the glass window. There were first year NSTP students on the lawn, planting. Then at the corner of my eye, I saw a lady in white who passed by the glass window of the university registrar. It was dark there and it’s really impossible to have a reflection of the sun inside, added to the fact that it’s cloudy and dim. From then on, I never go nor pass by the second floor without any companion--- humans of course.
When I finished my story, somebody joked, “in fairness, dati bagang sementeryo ang BU.” Then out of nowhere, one of the electric fans malfunctioned. I know it’s ordinary for appliances to malfunctioned but God, it got the perfect timing. It’s like somebody’s listening to us and scaring us. We screamed and squeezed ourselves in one corner of the office. Everyone, I know felt the same way I did--------scared. But the worse thing is yet to happen. One of the staff said something that climaxed everything that night. “Isara niyo ang bintana please lang.” he said almost teary-eyed. “Kilala niyo ako, (pag nagbibiro ako) this time hindi talaga ako nagbibiro. May nakita ako ng dumaaan sa bintana. Naka-brown. Nakayuko. Mabilis lang talaga….”
That was it. I almost cried. That was the same figure I saw Thursday night. It passed by the door. Mabilis and nakayuko and I really saw it. The next thing I knew, all doors, all windows- closed. Nobody dared to go outside the office. It was silent I never wished anything but to see the sun shine again. We realized one thing though. Hindi naming pag-aari ang office--- and maybe—“he” or “she” or whatever “it” maybe, is telling us one thing--- ‘amin ang building na ‘to.

He read the letter with so much longing for the person he left in the Philippines. He left his fiancé, Samantha to study medicine at Harvard University. He was palnning to propose to Samantha when he comes home.

Dear Sam,

It won’t take a year anymore, always remember that. Eight months to go, we’ll be having each other again . This coming December, always expect for the unexpected and hope for the best from me.

Samantha red Shin’s letter witht tears coming from her eyes. She stared out the window from her bed but she could see only the green curtain that was covering the glass window. She cannot see the rain but she canhear its droplets falling on the window sill. “ Shin, I think you’re the one who should expect the unexpected.” She said in a hoarse voice and smiled. She reached for her pen and paper to reply Shin’s letter but she accidentally dropped her pen. She then realized, “ it’s been ten years since you’ve left me and it’s also been ten years of communicating through letters. I think my pen has to rest for awhile. It’s already tiring, and I’m getteing tired also.” She did not pick up the pen but she returned the papers on the desk beside her.
Shin Keewin was waiting for Samntha’s reply. It had been three months since he had received sam’s letter before he replied and it was also five months to go before his homecoming. “Well maybe she’s just too busy to reply to my letter. I have to remind her.” He got his pen and paper and start writing a love letter for Sam.

Dear Sam,
Why aren’t you replying? I missed you so much. I’m dying for your presence beside me and I’m longing for your reply. I need to know if you’re okay. Please replymy letter. Even a simple hi will do. I just want to know if you’re okay.

Shins mother came inside sam’s room carrying the letter she just received from her son for Sam. “Sam, here’s another letter from Shin. Would you like me to open it for you?”
Sam sat up on her bed. “No, Auntie. I can still manage to open that by myself.” She opened the letter and didn’t show any emotion while reading it. After she finished, she gave the letter back to Shin’s mother. “ Auntie, you know what to do.”
Since samantha’s parents died from the car accident going to her graduation rites. Shin’s mother took responsibility of her,. Their families were close friends so it was easy for them to announce their deeper relationship.
Shin wrote another letter when he did not received any reply. He was so excited to write the letter because he knew that their dream had already been fulfilled.

Dear Sam
I don’t care if you don’t send me any reply because I’m going home earlier than what I‘ve told you but I still care for you, you know that. I’ve passed the examination for doctors! I’m too excited to go home and I’m too excited to see you! What you have to do now is wait for me. I love you! Wait! Before I forget, I started practicing calling me Doctor Shin Keewin Go and start calling yourself Mrs. Go.

When Samantha received the letter, she doesn’t know what and how to feel. She must be happy because it was a dream come true but fear struck her. It was a mixed emotion. All she needed to do was wait for what’s going to happen. Anyway, she had readied herself for Shin’s coming. She was excited too. She cannot deny that. After ten years of waiting and loneliness, at last, they had to face the truth together.
On December 12, 1990, Shin arrived unexpectedly early in the morning . When he rang the bell, his sleepy mother opened the gate. They hugged each other in excitement. He then asked, “ Where is Samantha? I wanna see her I missed her mother. And I missed you too.’ He kissed his mother.
“ She’s not here Shin but if you really wanna see her this early, come in anf wait for me, Ill just change my clothes.”
They drove their way going to Samantha. When they reached the palce , Shin looked at his mother with shock, “ Ma, why are we here? I think you misunderstood me. I said I want to go to Samntha.”
HiS MOTHER ANSWERED. “I KNOW. That’s why we’re here.” She led Shin to Samantha and when they reached Samantha’s room. Shin walked slowly as if the whole place was new to him knowing that the palce was his world and will be his world. And now , it had become samantha’s world too.
“Samantha..” he approached her and hugged her.
She woke up and gave him back a hug. “ Shin!” her tears fell from her tired eyes. She whisphered on his ears,” I told you, Shin, I needed you badly. “ She was too weak to hold him tight. She cannot even sense the pain in her every move because because of the morphine tha was injected to her. She cannot feel anything but she was thankful that despite all the numbness, her heart still feels the love she had for Shin. So far, it was her heart that was only functioning and waiting for Shin.
Samantha had brain cancer. She was diagnosed to have such cancer three years after Shin had left for Harvard. She ignored the medical help because she was waiting for Shin to be her to be her doctor until it was already on the second stage just two years after she was diagnosed. She had no choice but to accept to Shin’s mother offer to look after her. She tried to keep her condition a secret from Shin because she don’t wanna hinder Shin’s studies and dreams until she became bedridden and wasnn’t able to write anymore.
The cancer was already eating almost half of her brain. On Christmas day, her friends visited her. She was already losing her vision but she never told Shin about it except her doctor. Only the machines around her kept her body alive but her soul is still alive hoping that she can still marry shin who already proposed to her, hoping that she could still walk on the aisle going to the altar but all were just hopes to fight her despair.
On new year’s eve, Shin visited her at the hospital which became her second home. She could hardly recognize hi, all she could see was a black figure of a man. Only Shin’s voice ws her basis to tell that it was her love.
“ Shin, its new years eve. I want to celebrate it with the hope of having another year of my life to spend with you.”
Shin sat beside her bed.”What do you want to do?” he tried to sound casual.
“I wanna go out to see the fireworks display,” but she was almost blind.
“ samntha! No You Cant” Shin disagreed.
Please, Shin. I want to feel the spirit of new year. I want to feel that I survived another year and I wanna know if tomorrow is another year for me, for us. She cast a smile on her pale, chopped lips.
Shin had no choice. Samntha kept on insisting to bring her outside. He carried her and they laid down on the grass jst outside the hospital. Samntha was justdepending on her hearing to see the solors of the fireworks. The hour came for the fireworks display. Samantha was trying to smile as if she was seeing the fireworks. “ I love the colors! They are beautiful! I love you!, Shin”
“ I love you too, Samantha.” He kissed her forehead. They kept silent for a couple of seconds. The display was already lesssning when Shin asked. “Are you already tired?”
Samantha did not answer and as the last display boomed in the sky, her head fell out of Shin’s shoulder. Shin’s tears started to fall and he said,” You don’t have to answer me, I know.”He stood up and carried samantha’stired and lifeless body.

Tibicos: the Wonder Drug?

In this world where there are a revolution and demand for natural wellness, there has been a lot of different products that were processed and are sold in the market which promises great health benefits. There has been a lot of products which claims that there product is all natural. In community such as Philippnes where there is a ban for sickness, as many people would say, “Bawal Magkasakit”. This popular advertisement tagline has been so appealing to the audience because of poverty that most of the people experience. That’s why people find ways where they will attain precious wealth in inexpensive price.

The seach for the great panacea, universal cure, did not stop with the discovery of different medicines for diseases that during the earlier times is incurable. It can be noted that there has been a lot of products which claims that they are all-natural. These products, like mushrooms which had existed from nowhere. These mushroom which are famous in legends and fables, is now considered to be very beneficial with the appearance of Tibicos mushrooms in the limelight.

Tibicoos is a fungi which had originated from Tibet. This mushroom is known in different names anywhere in the world. They are compact, gelatinous masses which are white or yellowish in color. The curative effects of these fungi are made possible by the association of fungi, bacteria and water. This is a probiotic which is similar to kefir kombucha, Caspian Sea Yougurt and Viili. It was observed that they thrive best in a sugar called Polincillo, which is a Mexican sugar.

Polincillo coms from the pore sugar cane juice that are hand-cut, mechanically crushed and are heated so that its water content will be rduced. These sugar is found to be free of molasses and chemicals. This is the very reason why tibicos grows in its optimal with this food(sugar). Hindi tayo ang bida sa mundo… I know most of us think this way-well, I do. I thought ako ang centerpiece. But at least now I know…Madami pala kaming centerpieces.(hahahaha!). Girls are in reality diyosas. So, it is our responsibility to keep our image clean. We should also maintain a certain edge to those who are inferior to us.(hahahaha!) Para class… But no matter how we try to keep our image crystal clear, of course we would still face certain situations in life that will test our wit and beauty…..

So, the question is……..
How should girls deal some unexpected situations?

1. Nadapa ka in front of many people
• a. Stand up and smile. At least, you’re beautiful. And then run. Don’t give them a chance to laugh at you. Make sure that when they already do, you can no longer see them. It will hurt more to see them laughing. –

• b. Pretend that you fainted. Wait for some cute guys to lift and carry you up and then that’ time for you to groan and say “Oh… What happened?”

Characteristic of the Typical High School Biology Lesson
The typical class of BUCE-ILHS was to start with an opening prayer for three (3) minutes where an assigned student facilitates and the class prays together. The class starts at 7:15 in the morning, with Narra as the first section and to take biology subject, to be followed by acacia at 8:30 then it will be followed by Molave after the break time period. The subject was thought from Mondays-Fridays. The duration of the hours depends upon the day, since during Tuesdays and Thursday there is a short time period. They usually start the class by reviewing the past lesson for about 10 minutes (depending upon the need, after which the introduction of the new lesson is done. The medium of instruction used by the teacher was English. The teacher also adopted the code switching where she started his lessons discussing in English and afterward she speaks in the vernacular language explain and translate difficult words and technical terms which the students will understand easier.
Interaction in the class is facilitated by the instructor in which she posed questions based on the topic, which she asked the students and encourage them to participate by calling their attention. If the answer is correct the teacher shows appreciation to the students, but if not she thanks the students for raising his ideas or answers. Then he will call different student whom he thought knows the right answer. The lesson proper was done for about an hour.
Moreover, an evaluation of the lesson was made by conducting series of test such as short quizzes and a take home exam (depending upon the need), or an assignment.
The class demonstration in two(2) weeks involved discussion and group activities where games are involved. The students were exposed in different activities. Students were mandated by the researchers to join and participate on the activities that were prepared by the researchers. Involving the students in these kind of activities would catch the interest of the learners in learning the subject according to de Mesa and Albas.*
After the proper introduction among the respondents the pretest was administered. There had been some commotion among the student s as we announce that we will give the test, protesting that they were not informed of the test. But it was solved by thee announcement of the researchers that this will not have a direct effect on their academic grades.
There were three (3) topics that were introduced; these topics were chosen with the aid of Minimum Learning Competency and the assignment of the head teacher (Dr. Wilhelmina Ravago). These three topics were “An Overview of the Ecosystem, Levels of Organization, The Parts of a Plant.” These three topics were furnished a lesson plan to aid the researchers in delivering the topic, and to be better understood by the researchers. Similarly, games that are appropriate on these topics were made to be tasked based in conformity with the statement of Saricoban and Metin, that the use of activities like games both increases the cooperation and competition in the classroom. That is why the lesson infused with games was made sure by the researcher to involve all respondents. Moreover competitions among the group were tolerated so that the students will be more challenged in performing the task. These games were used in the introductory part of the lessons stated above, aside from the motivation that were performed by the respondents during the lesson proper. This technique was made not only to give them an overview about the topic but also to arouse their interest in the topic. This statement was supported by Zull, saying that biology plays a role in students’ attraction to games, he further stated that the biologically their eyes are drawn to movement and the auditory systems are attuned to pick up and pay attention to a range of sounds: in short games satisfy the students’ natural learning needs.
The two (2) weeks demo-lesson was made by the researchers where cooperative learning strategy and an interactive lecture method was the strategy used. The main purpose of which is to involve the all the students by working by group. But one of the topic which was “An overview of the ecosystem.” had not used the cooperative learning, the researchers used the interactive lecture method, and made sure that the goal of involving the students are still attained.
On the lesson on the “Levels of Organization,” all of the class was grouped into four (4), Cooperative learning strategy was used in order for them to work fast and to inculcate among them the value of cooperation. The lesson aimed to OBJECTIVES. The material used was cartolina and Manila paper. For the motivation, the teacher facilitates the review of their past lesson. The teacher presented the activity by giving them instruction and assigning them to groups. The groups were given 15 minutes to finish their tasks, wherein they are given sets of words that are jumbled and must be arranged to form the right words, and must be classified on what level of organization it belongs (e.g. molecular, cellular). The participation among the students was made sure by the researchers roaming around while they work and entertain questions that concern the respondents. The attention of those students that are not helping was called. Their work was checked, after they had performed the activity, the researchers had not suggested any format in presenting their work as long as they were able to classify where the jumbled words belong.
The activity lasted for fifteen (15) minutes and the processing of the topic followed that had lasted for about 30 minutes. Moreover, in the processing a thorough discussion was conducted in order to unlock the difficulties that were not able to address by games so that the students will understand the concepts clearer and help attain the objectives set by the researchers. The lesson ended by entertaining some questions and giving them some assignments for the next topic.
On the overview of the ecosystem an interactive lecture method was utilized. Researchers describe it as interactive since the answers and all of the information will not come from the demo-teachers; in short there will be no spoon feeding. Using a game where the students were given a set of words composed of letters that can be “strange” at a first glance. But if the observer knows how to decode the meaning of the word or decode the message, he will able to know the meaning of the word (e.g. H B N F T which means GAMES - this type of game uses Caesar’s Cipher). Before the intervention of the games and the topic was introduced, that teacher had conducted a review of the past lesson, which also served as an interiorizing activity. The introduction of the new topic followed, and the instructions were clearly explained and questions were addressed. It is evident among the students that this technique is new, since they were in awe when the researcher had posted the first set of letters. But because they have the perseverance and their curiosity was awoken, they were able to decode the word. Moreover the posting of the first word was also used as a motivation
At first, even if the students was already briefed on the things that they must do, the step in decoding the word was not revealed, the very reason is to arouse the interest of the students , sine according to Eros activities that are amusing and challenging and motivating allows meaningful use of skills. After about a minute of wrong responses on what is the word posted on the board, the researcher decided to reveal the technique on how to decode the word or decipher the meaning of the word. This strategy was used in order to involve and instill to their mind the biology is not only a “memorizing subject” but also a “mind stretching” subject. The researchers hd required the students to participate. Participation was promoted by being stringent to those students who just wait for their other classmate to reveal the answer. Most the were asked t go in front and solve for the words that was given by the researchers, which has something to do with the topic. The activity lasted for thirty (30) minutes, where the respondents were asked to solve on the board the words that are posted. The discussion ended by an activity where the respondents were given a set of words that they must decode using the same technique as stated above, and they classify the words which correspond to different kind of organisms based on its role on the ecosystem. Moreover more types of decoding technique were introduced. After an allotted time of twenty (20) minutes to finish their tasks, the researcher had checked their work, and they made sure that they are still involve in the checking by calling them randomly. Base on the scores shown in figure they were able to decode and classify the organisms based on the result. Moreover, an assignment was given among the respondents as a preparation for the next topic.
On “The Structure of Plants,” cooperative learning strategy was used. The researchers had used this strategy because of the nature of the games that was used. The materials were cartolina, sign board (1/8 cardboard), fish bowl or box. The game was called “Bio ka na ba?,” the students must work by group in answering the questions, which are related on the topic. Moreover the deliberation was encouraged so that they will arrive more likely in the correct answer. The OBJECTIVESS OF THE LESSON WERE. The teacher had a review of the past lesson for 10 minutes as a motivation. The teacher gave the instruction and on how to work with their group and on how to play the game. The teacher had divided the class into four (4) group, these four (4) groups were encouraged to have their own strategy in order for them to win. In this activity cooperation was encouraged in consonance with the statement of Saricoban and Metin. The researchers had see to it that this activity to be challenging and more amusing, since according to Csikzentmihilya that when people enjoy what they do, they manifest some characteristic experiential experience states that distinguish the enjoyable moment from the rest of their life. The game was executed like a typical quiz bee. The questions were divided into easy, moderate and difficult round. The easy round was characterized by questions with four (4) choices, while the moderate round has two (choices) and the difficult round with no choices. The rounds were allotted five (5), ten (10 and fifteen seconds respectively. The noise that was made by the activity suggests that the activity had been very challenging and amusing on the part of the respondents. Cheating with groups was not tolerated by calling the attention of those who compare their answers. The question was composed of thirty (30) items divided depending upon the level of difficulty. This activity lasted for about 45 minutes, and the next day was made as the continuation of the activity, to clarify some of the concepts and questions that arise because of the game. It can be noted that this kind of activity can transform the classroom in a challenging environment; the activity was ended by proclaiming the winner, or the group who got the highest score.
To summarize, the lessons that was introduced were, the levels of Organization, An overview of the ecosystem and the structure of a plant. The lessons used reviewing past lessons as an interiorizing activity, before introducing new lessons where are incorporated to promote a more challenging classroom environment. Participation among the group was encouraged by involving the students in the activity prepared by the researchers. It can be noted that the use of games can promote not only high involvement but also camaraderie. Competition was promoted since according to Cahilig learning become more interesting when learning is exposed to various experience and manipulative plays and competition is the force that enables the students to strive more.
In the developmental part of the lessons the three lessons where games are incorporated used cooperative learning approach. This was used because of the characteristics of the games that were introduced. Moreover the students were divided into smaller groups to ensure there utmost involvement on the given tasks. Most of the lessons have an allotted time of thirty (30) to forty-five (45) minutes. The feature of the closure was the summary of the concepts and unlocking some of the difficulties. The posttest was the tool used to determine if there was a characteristic change on the student’s performance that will be compared on their achievements in the pretest.

Our lady of Salvation parish in Joroan can be date as early as 1600’s, during the reign of Spain in the Philippines. Their patron saint is Our Lady of Salvation, thus the Parish Name. it can be noted that even if it is not a special day, but because according to devotees the image is miraculous, it attracts thousand pilgrim all year round.
The structure of the churchitself is a product of great thinking. With an ambience of solemnity, with the sound of the chirping birds this place can be a very good venue to unwind and relax on the busy demands of work in the city
Not only did that palce has a good church they also have stalls which sells souvenirs, in a very pocket friendly price. The souvenir that attracted me most is the prayer book, unfortunately because I am anxious when will be the next trip going back to Tiwi, Albay, I wasn’t able to own that. It turned out that the jeepney has rounds from 6:00 am to 6:00, and not knowing these was my dilemma. But you will see on the next paragraph why I enjoy more because of that.
The jeepney must have a full load before the driver decides to start the engine and let the wheels rolling. So my boredom lasted for thirty minutes, but it all worth it because my boredom had turned to nature trekking, it’s as if nature had made slides of different views that are really great to the eyes. I will not reveal much of the highlights of my trip, so that your curiosity will be aroused and you will decide to experience the beauty of the place. But this is the clue, you will have a ride which overlooks the shore. It was really a nature’s best, so come and experience it.

Ocean is the principal physical feature of our planet. They cover nearly 70% of the earth’s surface and running 7 miles (11.2 km) deep in places, representing the last great expanse on this planet to be chartered and explored. The physical characteristics of these great bodies of water directly and indirectly affect our everyday lives, and the living organisms that inhabit them are an important source of food and natural products.
Estuaries are scattered along the shores of all the oceans and vary widely in origin, type and size. Among the wide spectrum which estuaries environment covers are the mangrove communities in which different species of organisms along with the mangroves thrive to form a productive environment.
Looking deeper into an estuarine environment, there thrives the beautiful and ever productive MANGROVES.
The term mangrove does not refer to a specific taxonomic group of species. One description implies all halophytic (salt tolerant) species of tropical trees and shrubs representing approximately 12 families and over 50 species.
All are not necessarily related, but all are adapted to living in loose wet soil, saline habitat, and periodic tidal submergence. In addition, all possess different degrees of vivipary (live birth) with propagule (seedling) formation. In mangroves this is accomplished with seed germination while still attached to the parent tree.
The beneficial effects mangroves have on the marine ecology are summarized as follows

Establishment of restrictive impounds that offer protection for maturing offspring.

sorrsogon is rich in natural resources, but many of them remained undeveloped. The major crops are abaca and copra. The province boasts of producing the best hemp in the Bicol Region. Fishing industry ranks next. Freshwater and offshore fishing resources are not yet fully developed. There are plenty of raw materials for cottage industries. The province has untouched deposits of sulfur, kaolin, limestone and coal. Sawanga is one of the barangay in Sorsogon. It can be considered as one of the richest barangay in terms of wealth in natural resources. With its hospitable people that never fail to give smile, they are regarded as people who are actively involve in different activities and businesses, that ar helpful in for them to have square meals everyday.
Many people in Sawanga have different means of living from vending banig making, copra industries and fishing. Even if they are near to the sea, it is controversial that most of the dwellers does not rely to the sea as their means of living. Moreover, it is evident that most of the people engage in vending, especially sari-sari store.

Some of the respondents reveal that they engage in Copra Industry that are found at the mountain, far from the their place so their husband must hike for about thirty minutes before arriving at their place of work. One of respondents revealed that,” minsan naga lukad man kami, pero sirin ngonian medyo barato an lukad kaya medyo laylo nguna kami”.
It can be noted that most of the male respondents are the ones that are engaged in their work; very few females are the ones who are the breadwinner in the place. Aside from some respondents who are government employee most of the respondents who work are males. According to Tiyo Roque this is because,” di pa man ako pilay kaya ako an dapat na magtrabaho. Despite this women are engage in some activities such as “pagsugot” (tying abaca fiber), to add up to their monthly income.
Farming is also one of their means of living. Most of the males are the ones that are involve in farming which are accompanied by females during harvest season. Most of them plant rice, Even if most of the people plant corn, there produce is not intended to be delivered in the market, one of he respondents revealed that, “ yan na mga mais tigkaraw-karawan man sana an kan mga aki nagtalubo man,”. Moreover some also engage in backyard farming, but this is not intended for mass production. They plant camote, tomatoes and other vegetable; that are commonly used as basic ingredients.

Even if there is a vast land for rice farming. One of the respondents is the poor irrigation. This is because the irrigation only flows in the area during rainy season which according to them is sometime in September. A respondent had explained that, “ maski pa gusto niamong magtanom ki baga dai man gilayon pwede ta an tubig pag mauran man sana nag-aabot kun kaya, grabe an pahingalo kan daga. Dai mi man natatamnan yan nin paroy sagkod bako pa harani an Setyembre ta dai man kami naabot nin irigasyon.”
Since they are near to the sea, some of the people are utilizing this resource as in order to earn, they gather shells and fishes and other products that are derived in the sea. But majority of them are “shell fish scavengers”, in which they gather shellfish such as arakakak, tulos, and others as their viand. We are fortunate that we witness Aling bering gathering “arakaak” in the intertidal zone during low tide. She had revealed that this kind of species only appear during the day and only during low tide, she added that it usually appear during 7:00-9:00 in the morning, behind these hours it would be impossible to spot these king of shells. These shells are bottom dwellers and burrow into the soil as their defense mechanism.

This shell gathering is not intended to support the family financially, according to Aling Bering, she is doing this so that he will have an extra viand for her children since these shell has the characteristic taste that are loved by his children. Other species of mollusk that according to her is edible includes “tulos”. But the respondent also added that if “arakaak” is not cooked and prepared well it produce a taste that is not suitable. She had suggested that the pointed part of the shell must be extracted to achieve good taste. In can be noted that gathering these shells is not used as their means of living, but just an option for a viand. It is also evident that very few people engage in this activity, since most of them may no know how to prepare this species to have suitable taste. We weren’t able to taste the shells, but we had relied to the respondent of its taste, which according to her has a great taste.
Moreover because they are near to the sea they also derive their income from fishing. Most of fishermen revealed that their area is not anymore as productive as it was before. According to one of the respondent, “dati medyo mas maayos asin mas dakul an sira na an nakukuha niamo pero napektuhan kaming marhay kan pagdatong kan minahan dyan sa rapu-rapu. One of the reason of poor fish harvest is because they are near to minig firm in rapu-rapu, o n which the poisonous spill had been very destructive.

But still they were able to catch species of fishes as such as Law-law, Berdeng isda, and other species which varies every season. Their catch is directly delivered to a middle man, who vends fish in barangay with a bike. Some fisherman directly sells their catch through vending to their co-residents.

Another form of fishing is the use of a net that is attached to a bamboo in which the fishermen use to strain the small fish that can be found in the area. What is amusing in this type of fishing is that the couple are working together in gathering fish by which, the wife is the one that stores the catch on a basket and the husband is the one that strain an area where he thinks fish abound.

Mangroves are an integral component of the Philippine wetlands. Statistics show that for the, 7100 islands comprising the Philippines, freshwater lakes cover an approximate area of 114,000 hectares. Swamps and Estuaries total about 527,000 hectares. Brackish ponds encompass approximately 176,000 hectares and reservoirs amount to 130,000 hectares.
Be as it may, the country’s mangrove forest reserves are facing depletion, causing extinction of indigenous species of animals and plants, due mainly to encroachments by fishponds. The national mangrove Committee of the Department of Envitronment and Natural Resources (DENR) noted that fishpond operators have asked for the release of 70.300 hectares when the hectare available for disposal is only 67,546 hectares. The government hs or larger, should have left undamaged on strategic places after cutting, to ensure successful regeneration after logging.
If Parangtotoo will be converted into as a resort, it will be of advantage to the community since they will have extra revenue that will add up to the budget of their community. But the community must take into consideration the fact that they must also conserve the mangrove since it is home for some fishes and are used as home of migratory birds. Recent practices reveal that the emphasis for mangrove forest has been on the development, in particular conversion of these areas into fishponds. Through the years, the mangrove issue has evolved into question of sustainability and environmental balance. Take out one element of the ecosystem and one will have an unquantifiable and serious dilemma. In shot term there is considerable potential; of converting the area into a resort, that will result to positive economic gains. However, in the medium to long term these gains may well be diminished by the negative economic outcomes that may arise from the loss of the ecosystem goods and services provided by the mangrove communities. Since the area is also home for some corals there is a possibility that these corals might be suffocated by the sediments since these mangroves are the one’s who acts as strainer for these sediments and this mangrove communities regulate water quality . This service is particularly important where the surrounding region contains sea grass or coral reefs given that these habitats are particularly vulnerable to deterioration if water quality declines. If coral reefs and sea grass habitats were to be lost, numerous highly valuable ecosystem goods and services would also be lost. For instance, many coral reefs, sea grass and the organisms found amongst these habitats have considerable tourism value. Also, many recreational and commercial fish species spend part of their life cycle in coral reefs and sea grass areas. Furthermore, coral reefs provide buffers against strong wave energy, protecting the coast against erosion. If mangroves were removed from the estuarine area, it is possible that the deterioration in water quality could impair the services provided by the sea grass and coral reef communities. This is particularly likely in the case of coral reefs, given that these communities are already under considerable stress world wide due to, amongst other pressures, the effects of climate change. If these will proliferate the resources that abound in the area will have a significant effect on the environment.
The preservation and conservation of mangroves in the [Philippines is said to have taken for granted in the past. The attention presently focused on wetlands is the result of the increasing concern that the destructive processes underway may be irreversible and may be fundamental as to endanger human existence.. As A famous environmentalist’ said, when a species is wiped put or threatened, it is dangerous to human beings------ because if the wildlife cannot survive it means we are creating conditions that are not conducive to life. Indeed we are beginning to realize that man’s activities against the environment are beginning to endanger the world. The removal of mangroves in the area will also be a threat to fishes. Because fishing and fishpond agriculture is practiced in the area, the fishes will be affected, since the shallow water environment of the mangrove estuary area and the mangrove roots themselves protect these juvenile fish from predators like larger fish and birds. Furthermore, the survival of juvenile fish is aided by the long residence time of water amongst the mangroves, which is facilitated by the mangrove roots. This creates a relatively calm water environment where larvae and juvenile fish can settle . When mangroves are removed from an estuarine environment, many of these ecosystem services that aid the survival and production of fisheries can be either lost or diminished in value. For instance, it has been suggested that the comparatively smaller amounts of food produced by a diminished mangrove area will cause a decline in the rate of reproduction amongst mangrove dwelling fish to decline. Primarily this is because the fish will divert energy away from reproduction to competition for an ever-smaller reserve of food . At the same time, the limited availability of food and the smaller habitat size associated with mangrove removal will result in weaker and more exposed fish populations vulnerable to increased rates of predation. Considering that many commercially important fish species spend some part of their life-cycle in mangrove environments, commercial and recreational fisheries are likely to suffer fish declines and by association negative economic consequences as a result of mangrove removal. This then has negative economic consequences for regional economies that have substantial input from fish based industries.
But if the developer will consider, the suggestion that he will reduce the cutting of mangroves into a level that is tolerable, a point that is not destructive into the environment, he can pursue his project taken into consideration that they will have a committee that will see to it that the activity of this resort will not affect the balance of economic development and environmental damage. It can be noted that effective rural development comes through sound governance; with participation at all levels, sustainable development will be people-oriented, integrated and have a multispectral agenda. Policy coherence must be a primary objective, developed through wide-ranging public involvement and, where necessary, through the promotion of effective representative organizations. Much greater emphasis on advocacy (outside of the subsector) is required to raise awareness of the role for aquaculture in rural development and to raise the stakes for institutional change.
On the other hand, the economic benefits from development on converting the place into resort are substantial; several resorts have constructed artificial beaches by dredging the back reef area for sand. Another large environmental impact the tremendous amount of development which may occur in the island is erosion. Erosion is particularly of concern in an area which is fringed by a coral reef. Increased run-off leads to higher turbidity which can damage coral by decreasing the amount of sunlight which reaches it. But if the developer will see to it that there is satisfactory upland management, control of deforestation in particular, increases sedimentation and sediment loads in rivers will be controlled.
Given the fact that there are upland farmers, Pesticide runoff upland may directly damage some species or it may induce sustained stress in the animals, which leads to epizootics, since there is no natural barrier between the entrance of nutrients and the sea. It has now spread throughout Central America, Mexico and as far north as the state of Texas in the United States.
Development is not harmful, but its consequences due to the abuse of the resources is harmful. In consideration of the widespread damage to beaches and beach properties due to human intervention, it is fair to say that if we convert PArangtotoo into a tourist destination they will be under threat and certainly appear to be more vulnerable than we thought a decade ago. Our understanding of the sciences critical to the management of our coastlines is growing but the cost of applying solutions to rapidly eroding beaches is often prohibitive; more so because governments and property owners have yet to publicly acknowledge the wisdom of jointly shouldering the costs for remedial actions and certainly have not identified formulas for sharing the costs for the work that has to be done.
Even of tourism will boast because of the new destination the government must consider that, in any case, even with the best coastal engineering technology, we may be fighting losing battles in some instances. In some cases the life expectancy of coastal properties may be so short that it may preclude their use as security for investment and mortgage loans. Several of the regions best beaches have deteriorated so much that they are unrecognizable from what they used to be in the 1970s. Here, I refer not only to the rate of erosion, which is alarming in some areas, but also to the deteriorating profile and overall quality of the beach, particularly where coastal engineering solutions have met less than desired success.
It seems that when in order to have development some of the nature’s precious species must be destroyed in order to make way for development. Notwithstanding the growing awareness towards better development practices, conventional approaches are still being used in the design and sitting of tourism facilities. For large projects or projects in environmentally sensitive areas, design and sitting decisions should have the benefit of resource inventories, trained site analysis and master planning, using tested methodologies to achieve sustainability. Such approaches can lead to maintaining the integrity of the landscape, conserve key habitats and resources, maintain biological diversity, conserve energy and water, reduce pollution and save hotels money in so doing.
Ideally, properties should follow-up an initial audit with the adoption of environmental management systems, linked to a clearly articulated environmental policy. Environmental agencies with statutory authority for regulating wastewater discharge, storage and use of chemicals and other hazardous substances should view the environmental audit as an important procedure in achieving regulatory objectives for improved environmental management.
In addition, governments could consider linking duty free and tax concessions provided to hotels, marinas and other tourism operations to a level of environmental stewardship, which would be determined for such properties. The audit would be used as an instrument for evaluating the performance (based on reasonable performance criteria and indicators) of such properties, against which a decision for extending concessions would be made. Amendments to appropriate incentive legislation for tourism development would be required for this to occur.
Interventions should however be mindful of the enormous impact that development in Parangtotoo. A dynamic community with a range of business opportunities and potential for future growth has evolved with some level of planning but to a large extent through the influence of market forces.
Planning interventions are urgently needed to mitigate emerging problems and to develop an urban aesthetic with a central concern for maintaining a desired quality of life. Such interventions should not seek to stifle the dynamic process of urban development but to provide necessary guidance. To be effective, interventions should occur through the coordinated efforts of government development and regulatory agencies and with the collaboration of the business community and not-for-profit interests.
Spatial issues related to the development and operation of tourism facilities and activities are wider and certainly more complex than are presented in this paper. What I have tried to highlight are some of the issues inherent to the process of urbanization and urban transformation that might be experienced in the area and which to a large extent are being driven by developments in tourism. For the most part, these issues are spatial in nature but with an obvious relationship between land and resource use and economic development.
There are in addition, critical and inseparable links between spatial issues of land use and economic development and the social and cultural well-being of these islands that could not be addressed in this paper, time not allowing. Therefore, suggestions provided must be seen within the broader context of the wider challenge for managing development that goes beyond tourism.
I would like to conclude by reiterating the need to build institutional capacity to help meet this challenge. In light of the issues raised, institutional strengthening to manage urban growth and transformation is critical. Building institutional capacity does not imply providing additional skilled resources in all cases but rather the need quite often to evaluate and make adjustments to the way we deploy resources. The capacity exists within local populations to plan for and manage development as well as to play a bigger role in the ownership of development in the tourism sector.
Deployment of existing human resources for example could facilitate the development and management of data for evaluating development trends, for diagnosing development issues and for policy analysis. Adjustments to political and administrative structures may be required to achieve more effective planning and administration for urban growth.
To conclude, mangrove communities provide crucial ecosystem services that support many economically important industries including recreational and commercial fishing, and tourism. Looking at the big picture, the economic losses that will occur in the long term should be seriously considered before mangroves are removed for development purposes.

The effects of the inventions of the newest technology can never be hide among us. Almost everyday a new kind of technology is born and the technology that was made yesterday somehow becomes obsolete. These inventions range from the new models of cell phones to the newest models of toilet bowl.
The leap of mankind indeed from the first time it reached the moon can never be measured by merely using the best measuring tools. At present, we had learned to manipulate many things and organisms; inventing and altering organisms that are more resistant to pest and has longer shelf life. The power of human brains is also immeasurable and unpredictable, that what people thinks to exist only in sci-fi films became tangible and proved to have beneficial effects. Generally new technologies and its effects can be divided into two, those beneficial and those that are not. Beneficial since it is helpful to man, and harmful because of humans’ misuse.
Technologies had brought beneficial effects to the government. The products of the perseverance of the human mind had helped the government earn taxes, which had not only brought revenue for the people, but extra service this institution provides. The support of this institution to the inventors had paved way to the inventions of more useful products and products that are innovative and human-like. It is great that these institution is the one that reinforce the inventors to think and create more.
Religion, because of conservative orientation of most of religious institution from the country, it can be noted that most of the inventions that are against their doctrine are greatly banned among it’s devotees, with the purpose of preserving what according to them is “morale”. It is also established that science and religion are two opposing powers, but I think this statement is not true. It is science that reinforces religion; it is science that proves and complements the existence of God.
Moreover, the effects of this technology in trade and commerce are more obviously felt. Many countries had attained wealth because of the investment in the production of these technologies. Because of their investment to it they are now one of the most powerful and richest countries in the world in terms of their GNP and GDP. It is a fact that even a country such as Japan which is poor in resources had became wealthy, which somehow brought insult to countries that are rich in natural resources but are considered poor.
The things that only exist in the mind during the earlier times had become so natural today. Because of the brilliant mind of inventors reality is always within reach. We can never put to waste the fact that because of the invention of new technologies and the power of the mind had been very helpful in making peoples lives easier and more manageable. Moreover, the mind had already explored the extraordinary and just like in a fairy had had made the impossible within reach. We can say, that now people will try not to believe in the impossible making the invention of these technology as a inspiration.
But because people does not have control on many things, and because of their alteration to the natural equilibrium of nature, most of the changes that are felt in the environment was caused by the abused of mankind to the resources that are available. Because of to much curiosity man had moved mountains just to cater their selfish need, not taking into consideration the role of these mountains in our existence. Some inventions of mankind had altered the balance of the atmosphere, such as CFC refrigerators that had contributed to the warming of the earth. Man had invented a lot of medicines, had had prolonged the lives of many inhabitants of earth that had brought overpopulation, which is one of the cause of global warming.

On Friday, February 2, 2007, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—the leading international group of climate scientists—published a 20-page summary of a much longer scientific report, The Physical Basis of Climate Change, which confirms global warming is now “unequivocal” and states with more than 90 percent certainty that human activity “very likely” has been the primary cause of rising temperatures worldwide since 19501.
Because the technologies most humans use are not “green” it is inevitable that the atmosphere and the earth as a whole will not be affected. Similarly, because most of these inventions are made because of urgency of its use, its effect on the environment are not well studied unless rampant and its diverse effects in the nature is felt.
The report summary also says that global warming is likely to continue for centuries, and that it is already too late to stop some of the serious consequences it will bring—even if mankind could somehow hold the line on greenhouse gas emissions worldwide starting today.
Despite those grim conclusions, however, the report does say that there is still time to slow global warming and to lessen many of its most severe consequences if we act quickly. At the same time, the IPCC report avoids prescribing specific strategies, leaving that to policymakers worldwide, and the audience for which the report summary was prepared. In the strongest language ever used by the IPCC, the report says that human activity “very likely” has been the primary cause of global warming since 1950. (The term “very likely” indicates more than 90 percent certainty.) The report summary also says that human activity has been a major contributor to climate change since the Industrial Revolution, which began around 1750.
Global concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide—three of the most notable greenhouse gases—have increased significantly over the past 250 years as direct result of human activities. Concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases now far exceed any found during ice core research spanning the past 650,000 years.
The increase of carbon dioxide is due primarily to the use of fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, and changes in land use, such as cutting down forests to make way for farming, housing and other development. Increases in methane and nitrous oxide are primarily due to agriculture. Because people need to use these things for their existence some does not even care and are not aware that some of their activities are harmful to the atmosphere, which had caused effects that can hardly be solved at present.
Throughout most of human history, and certainly before human beings emerged as a dominant species throughout the world, all climate changes were the direct result of natural forces.2 But because of the rule of mankind among all, this natural phenomenon had changed, and because we had altered this, we are the one to blame.

BURIAS ISLAND ADVENTURE

Burias Island is one of the major islands of Masbate. Ticao and Masbate Island are the two major islands. The island has two (2) municipalities, Claveria and San Pascual. A beautiful island having great beach and amazing sunset.
IT was September 17 when my friend Jyrswyn invited me to their townhouse in Burias Island (see my October 10 post). Because we are aware how beautiful is the place, we had n not think twice and at exactly 4:00 AM of September 18 we had ride a bus bound to Ligao city and from there ride another jeep bound to Pio Duran Port.
We had really enjoyed our first day, engaging in a lot of physical activities from swimming and more. But all of these impressions had slightly change, when we learn that there was a storm, and Burias is signal NO.1 and we got afraid because the calm sea looked like a furious lion.
I was a bit upset by these turn of events, what has to be a joyful experience will be a tragedy, (sighs), a nightmare that has brought fears on us. I don’t like you to experience what had happened to us my friends, which is why I have here some tips that may help you in the adventure you are planning.

1. Carefully plan your vacation. Do not venture in a vacation that was not carefully planned. Make sure to plan everything, from the things you must include in your luggage, itinerary and a place to stay.
2. Decide on the things you must place in your luggage. It would be helpful to plan the things you must wear, so that it will not cause you much burden. Understand that, extra weight will only become burden in your part.
3. Make a list of paraphernalia that you must bring. If you are one of those who are conscious and cares much to your skin and your body, it would be better to bring extra luggage so that things that are much essential must be given focus. Make sure that it is only minimal so that you will not violate commandment number 2.
4. Make sure that you have a nice and beautiful place where to stay. It is important to choose a place where you will feel as if the place where you stay is your “home away from home,” that is why it is important to choose carefully the hotels and services these hotels provide. Doing these will not require too much energy since there are lots of sites in the internet such as http://www.hotelscombined.com that can help you make intelligent choices, in deciding where to choose such as which is devoted in providing you options where to stay, and compare the prices among an arrays of hotel all over the world or your destination.
5. Make a list of things that you must bring. The purpose of this is for you to check and recheck the things that you decide to bring so that the activities that you plan to make will not be ruined, just by the absence of these things.
6. Bring extra money for unexpected expenses. Eve if you had formulated the best plan, it would be best to bring extra money to cater unexpected situations. Moreover it is strategic to bring money since most of the destinations has a place where you can buy souvenirs that are great and unique.
7. Don’t be afraid to explore. This is the second time this year that that DNHS, through the efforts of its faculty members had make way to invite the students toparticiapte in the aforementioned activity.\
Yuoth encounter Virac Model, is a three day antivity that is supported by the national youth commission because of its power to change the participants for the better.

Youth encounter program is packed with 12 topics whichare connected, that is a powerful that changes the way the participants look on their llives.

It’s been a great day today since I think I had accomplished more than enough. By the way I had just finished my doing my job in the Mentors office and wow I am so tired doing things like placing stickers on the envelopes that will be used in the kits. But aside from the feeling tired I am so happy since my day was not wasted into things that are not worthwhile activities, such as talking unimportant things among my classmates.
What has been an empty Wednesday has been another day fully packed with things that had made me a busy person.
Well its pay to be busy since you are dealing with a lot of hard work but sometimes we need to take some rest and breathe. Just like the, machineries its better when it’s maintained into its optimum capacity to have a worthwhile result. Just like this equipment, humans’ needs to take some rest in order to maintain its optimum capacity to work. We have a lot of relaxation techniques and massage that are readily available in the market which has testimonies of thousands who really had a nice change on their well-being.
These massages really uplift my day. This also stirs up my life and inspire me to go on, even in complicated lives. At the end of the day I am so grateful that I was able to finish my day with another relaxation technique which id breathing and I am so happy with the result.

The geographical location of a place does not tell anything about what you shuld expect in the place, nor will it tell on your mind how challenging it is top travel in such place. This really is the realization of mine.
WOW,I have no idea what to expect in the place, I had been to Sorsogon only once and it is far from the capital, only in Casiguran. So I am puzzled of what to expect in the place.
The bus had leave Daraga at exactly 9:30, and we have no idea how many minutes will it takes us there, Aand our travel had started with lots of foods we had bought in the supermarket, well that's more advisable than buying in the ambulant vendors that climb the bus. We are very thankful that we have acontact in Bacon Sorsogon, the heaven sent Charmagne Gaspar of Bacon Sorsogon, because of her guiding powers we had reached sorsogon safely and lots of foods. Actually as far as foods is concern, there was a flood of foods, it was like a feast. The hospitality that her family had extended to us was topnotch.
At exactly 11:30, the time that signal the start of ur sorsogon adventure, well we had been overwhelmed by the place, actually the place was great but the edifices such as the office of the Mayor, is far from the city, about 5 minute ride from Sorsogon City. We are very thankful that the Mayors and his suboordinates are cooperative if not we will not able to finish our mission.
Charmagne celll phone which is intended for our documentation had malfunctioned so we had gone to Lagamayo, we had waited more tham 35 minutes so that her cellphone be repaired, we were shocked when the time that we have to pay, the repairman is actually a saleslady,and she does not want to accept our payment, thank God I have biscuits in my bag, and I had given it as our payment(actually she does not want to acccept it), so we were thankful for her services.
We first take our lunch in Charmagnes house in Santo Domingo, Bacon Distict, about 30minutes drive from the city. and we were greeted with the hospitality of the family and magnificent foods that we reallly love. Actually my favorite is the gelatine I almost eaten half of it, that was serve in the serving plates.
As early as we finish cleaning ourselves to look good, we had continued our journey going to Sawanga, the last barangay in Bacon BOundary from the city and more than 6barangay from Bacon District. We are very lucky that there was a jeep bound to Sawanga, and its like a cargo truck because the jeep has thousand loads, ranging from sacks of flour to electric fan and a lot more.
We had reached Sawanga around 3 PM And we only have one and 30 minutes to negotiate to the Barangay Captain since the last trip is bound to go back at exactly 4:30, very short hour(sighs). Well we are very thaankful that the Barangay Captain was very copperative and one with our misssion to serve. But we are really overwhelmed since it seems that her first lady is the Barangay Captain and not her Spouse, but then thats alright because they are great help.
We had spent our reamning minutes for explotring the place and beach hopping(kuno), and the beach was really great I almost take off my clothes because the place and the beach is like a virgin women that arouse my senses.
Our adventure had ended with a asnack in Charmagnes house and we had gone back to Sorsogon areound 7:00 and I cannot tell you anything about our ride going home because I am aslleep althrought the trip.

We were like toys, we were played like a dice, it's as if we are like a saw that was pushed and pulled by a carpenter. We are persons that does not have power, but we know how to think and to fight. I have to admit that I lose hope but never did my firing anger did subside.
I am not angry because they are not signing our letter, but because of poor orientation among the students, which had caused our delay, and now we are like those person who cannot make a concrete work.
It is ironic that in a state university where the students should have been an epitome of persons who experience freedom are subjected to this kind of thing, in which a higher-ups control all the movement and affairs of the students.
The thing is the name of or school is "Bicol University College of Education" and not "Albay University", and this is enough justification that the service that this institution is rendering to the people should not be limited to Albay but throughout BICOL.
Moreover, power should not be used to proclaim to the world that you are great, this power is only loaned, not totally given. Yes, those people that are not in position are sub-ordinates, but it doesn't mean that this sub-ordinates has less power than the one's in position.

Ot seems really great that you had visited my blogspot huh I find it hard to cope with my busy day. by the way I had taken the PMA qualification exam AND IT WAS REALLY one hell lot of adventure. It's as if we are really military and that was great. My back has become very stiff because we are not almost allowed to move. Well let me tell you this, it is one of the most exciting part of my life. Actually I had pressured myself, since based on the qualification that's my first and last try. Well until now I can still feel the pressure. HUh the test was quite easy but because of the short time alloted on the test well I say, GUd kuck to myself.

Actually because of that experience I was able to know what I really want to do, I really want to serve the country, and be the next president of the Philippines. If I will not be able to be the president I will try to be prominent, and this will start now byu doing worthwhile.

Wow what a busy day. You just can't imagine how busy am I doing things for 3 organizations in one day. I feel like I'm an artist with a hectic schedule. REVIVING YOUTH'S INVOLVEMENT

Never in my life did I involve myself in church activities until I reached 19 years old. Even if you go to church regularly, I rarely help in planning activities to promote and bring back the confidence of youth to the Catholic Church. One of the difference of this church with other sects is most of its servers are already mature or in the age of retirement. There is poor number of youth. But in Daraga Parish ( my beloved parish, we have this so called Daraga Parish Youth Group, this organization is tasked to bring to life youths’ love for God and to transform their surplus energies to attain worthwhile products, and be able to serve God using that energy. Moreover this organization is inculcating to its members their undying spirit to be the catalyst to achieve their goal.

The organization has been existing and at present this organization is serving 4 areas, which is composed of more than 20 barangay. Even if the officers and the organizations receive no allowances, they worked hard, you can see that money doesn’t matter if you will just see them working. IN the first quarter of this year the organization had sponsored 2 projects, with the support of the parish priest Fr. Jovic Lobrigo.

The organization has an array of activities under the planning stage this year. Actually in the Youth Encounter Program that was in partnership with Daraga National High School, majority of the facilitators are members of DPYG. Similarly, the First September Youth Fest will be sponsored by this organization. But the only problem of this organization is on the financial matters, that’s why we are appealing from your heart, please help us by being one of our sponsors in this activity. WORK, CHORES AND MY HANDSOME FACE

Today I have lots of requirements to pass. But then no matter how haggard my face is, I never fail to smile. Huh, its really difficult when ou have a lot of chores to be done, so I am looking forward at the end of the day so that my burden will lessen. By the way this Friday we will have our midterm test on the two subjects, so help me God.

By the way I am so happy because I had just finished typing the letters for the first DARAGA youth festival, one down, I have to do alot more . If you were able to visit the Philippines in September 6, 2008 don't dare miss to attend that event.

By the way on the third wek of August we will visit Ticao Island, Masbate, not as a tourist but as researchers. I will share to you my experience as early as I was able to be back online.

Its been sometime sine I dreamt to be a part of a publication, and now am reaping the fruit of my perseverance. This proves that dreams really do come true, but if you will not move to make that dream into reality, nothing will happen.

My first assignment was to bring the chairs in the office, which is located in the third floor of the admission office, to have a clear idea of the place its a three storey building with no Elevator , unfortunately I was already close when we are about to fetch the chairs. Then here come the second job, I had encoded some articles for our wall news, and to create a nice impression to our EIC, I had key in the letters as fast as I could.

What I am looking forward is the bonding that the group will have, and to see my name and my work printed on paper. I’m doing my job with the best of my knowledge and ability so that I will not be the weakest link among the group. I an very open that one of my weaknesses I am not well equipped with the knowledge to write news articles, but then as of now I am starting to read some news to learn the art.

I am looking forward on sing the paper to tell the world my views and my feelings and most of all I am excited to use the power of paper to influence, if not inform. Being able to inform people with relevant news is my goal, and I am hoping that this goal will help my readers.

By the way I want to share something about my qualifying exam, it was June 25, 2008 and I am busy doing my thesis when my brain had told me that I should urinate, automatically I had gone to C.R., luckily when I was approaching in CB 9 I had red the information posted which tells that the screening for new mentor staffers was extended. I had urinate as fast as I could and even if I have a mind that is thinking twice, I had just think of this phrase as I approach the Mentors office, “ Intelligence will carry you as far as your courage may go”, and it really helped. During the test proper I am very thankful to my exposure to noisy streets and classrooms back then, because of that I was able to work under unconducive environment.

It’s July 9 Wednesday when I Had seen Joe-Bren posting the result, and to my amazement I had seen my name occupying the last spot. My heart had beaten like a drum in a tribe that is celebrating, and my lungs breathed as if it was my last. My flood had flown like a river. Until now the excitement and the joy is not reaching its diminishing stage, and I love it. Allow me to tell you this, sometimes it takes a lifetime to try, but nobody succeeds without making a try.

From abaca, to rattan and a wide array of materials, you can see a lot of products and great souvenirs that are ideal gifts that will not fail to bring joy to your friends or your relatives. If you are a person who just wanted to be unique, there are lots of things you can choose, such as key chains and bags hat has unique designs.

The Rise in the Price of Rice

There has been a time when my mom has to join the people in NFA accredited stores in Daraga, Albay. She has to wait for almost 30 minutes just to have 3 kilos of rice, good for a day. Similarly, our neighbors have to wake up 5:30 in the morning just to be the first in line in the NFA (National Food Authority) station. This tells us that the growing problem on rice shortage is real is not just a myth.

A typical Filipino family is composed of 5-7 members. Each family consumes about 4.5 kilos of rice a day, and this is not proportional to the on the three kilos they can buy in this stations. But then because o necessity they were able to come up with ways so that this three kilos will be enough for the family. Rice shortage had directly affected the Filipinos since it is their staple food, they rarely eat cassava or other crops during lunch, you can always see rice products on their table. Filipinos are rice persons and because of this shortage in this commodity is a big problem in the Philippines.

The government ‘s initiative to solve this problem is to import rice from Vietnam and other neighboring countries ( by the way it is insulting in the part of the Filipinos that their former students had exceed their teachers capability, but on the other hand this tells that Filipinos are great teachers), but what if Vietnam will suffer the same situation as the Philippines is experiencing now, because of climate change, will this country will continue to cater the growing demand for rice or the need of their people?

The government should have o create and come up with a more comprehensive idea to solve this shortage. Why not educate the people about the foods that can be used in lieu of rice such as banana, cassava and other foods which have the nutrient similar with rice. If this will be successful the price of commercial rice will dipped-off since there will be lower demand of people. Yes this can be difficult, but it is POSSIBLE.

If the cravings of people will not stop, there will be a time when people will have to fight in order to survive. As of now, there are always clashes between the NFA hopefuls, actually some box each other and some wrestle, just to be able to be the first in line. If this continues, worst can be experienced, and maybe after some time people will murder somebody just so that he will not die.

The government is not the only one to govern, the people constituting it has a significant contribution to the problem. To solve this problem changes in the household must be done.

It’s time for the Philippines, to face problem in its eye. Not on its side. A time for the country to prove that they are not mediocre but a country that works for the best.

In the book of Miller ( Environmental Science) in page 11, he had stated the following, “ most resource analyst expect that the price of oil will rise sharply sometime between 1995 and 2010, when the worlds oil demand exceeds at a rate at which remaining supplies can be extracted.” Miller is not another Nostradamus or Madam Auring, he is but an author of a book. Comes the present, 2008, and the prediction comes to life. The price of oil rise almost every day, and everything in the market is greatly affected.

It seems that oil has direct control on us; our lives are directly affected by it. From our means of transportation that delivers well in the market, gasoline is utilized. It is not really bad to use this form of energy but our dependency on it had able to enslave us gradually. A recent research result had revealed that Philippines is the 12^th most populous country in the world, these shows that more should be served by the government, and this also tells us that more people that demands on oil. Our demand for oil is like a vice that only medical therapy can alleviate.

One of the basic principles in economics is this, “the lower he demands he lower the price.” This tells us that if we moderate our demand for oil, the prices of fossil fuels will decrease. Unfortunately because our country belongs to the poorest countries in the world, we cannot blame the government I they invest not enough money in purchasing equipment that uses renewable resources. Philippines have a lot of potential renewable energy source but because of poor government budget and a bunch of corruption this potential energy source remains unexplored.

No matter what procedures we make, the possibility that fossil fuels will be obsolete will not be given enough solution. Fossil fuels is an example of nonrenewable energy source, that’s why the need to have a much accessible power source must be given due attention by the government, for the benefit of mankind and for the Earth.

What should be done must be done now, so that its effects will lessen, if not solved. People have been given the domain over this world, but then their responsibility to take good care of it must be given importance. We had already experienced the benefits, now is the to act and put the responsibilities on our shoulders

The Emerging Question in the Climbing Prices of Oils in the World Market

The most pocket friendly way to reach our house is by taking a jeepney ride from Bicol University. I had waited almost 15 minutes just to be able to have a jeepney with a space for me, I was very lucky since our pep squad practice was postponed because of the rain so my body will have time to repair the muscles that needs to be healed. BY the way, when I was about to pay my fare, the jeepney driver had asked me if I am a student (by the way during this time I am in school uniform). “Why do these people needs to ask things that are obuse? I had asked myself, but my brain supplied me no answer.

But can I blame the driver, or do I have the right to do so. With the increase in price of gasoline in the world market, the public utility jeepnies was greatly affected since they are the main consumers of this product here in the Philippines, and their engines will not run without it. From May up to the first week of this month, oil price in the world market had urged to transport groups to appeal for fare hike to have profit enough for their family.

NO matter what perspective do we look on this matter, it is the consumer of PUJ’s that are greatly affected. Personally in my school budget for a day that is Php 60.00, almost 30% is allocated for my fare even if I walk in the afternoon. Even if they say that it is better to walk, I can’t withstand to walk during the afternoon because of the intense heat of the sun that gives pain in my head.

Because most of the machineries are powered by gasoline (fossil fuels), some of the products that are really needed had risen in their market price. Almost all of these commodities was greatly affected that some has to switch to those brands with poor quality. But then we cannot blame the businessmen since they will not be able to provide services if their business has poor capital.

But who’s to blame? Where do we point our fingers and blame? Is it the Philippine government or the dependency of mankind to oils? Indeed, if we try to lessen consumption on oil of up to 50% by using renewable energy source to run industries, there is a possibility that the price of this commodity in the world market will plunge. This can be a noble idea, but this idea is hard to realize since a lot of budget is needed. But if the government has the willingness and will exert some effort, IT WILL NOT BE IMPOSSIBLE.

As I tuned in to the AM radio after I had waked up, there is a beautiful suggestion which tells, [and] “To force the oil companies to cut their products price there should have a “car less day” This is a very nice idea, and will possibly answer the problem on the ballooning oil price. But the bigger question is this, “If this car less day will be approved will the consumers survive?

There are so many questions that need to be answered, but if we act now to solve this problem, tomorrow we will wake up that our problem on oils will just be another data in the history books.

My Unique Experience of Being Elected as an Escort

“ Please don’t vote for me as the vice-president of the club since I am vying to be the escort of the club”, this was my joke that I had thrown in front of my co-members during our election, that they had taken seriously, and “chadan” my wish had came true. To those who do not believe I can present to you pertinent papers that can prove my claim. What is great of being an escort is the nice characteristics that are associated with the word such as being handsome, tall, huggable, cute and dark to name few. I am very fortunate because almost 85% of the adjective associated with the word are true to me. I will not claim that I am handsome to prevent the protest of those who know me well.
What is more peculiar is this, whenever I declare that I am the escort of the club, there is always a big question mark that is formed in the brain to those who hear my claim, not because they can’t accept it but because they cant accept it, but because their brain re just conditioned the word escort means tall, dark and handsome, it so happened that they just can see the requirement that starts with letter “H” is not present to me.
During our induction ceremony last July 11, 2008, the professors present was turned speechless when my name was called, especially when Cindy Belaro had declared that I am the biology clubs escort. Almost all of the students present look at me as if wondering, “why this man”. THIS IS MY ANSWER…. “But why not”. Actually before I had gone in front of the stage, I am a little nervous of what will be the reaction f the spectators, but then when my name was called I just tried to relax and walk as if I’m visiting the mall.
The issue of me as an escort was not given an end after the induction ceremony. When I had gone to the College Students Council office, I was greeted by Dessa and Ronnie a warm congratulatory remarks, with special insult. I just try to look at ease, I just laugh whenever they laugh and after a while they had stopped. The greeting and congratulations does not end there, even near our favorite “tambayan” they are teasing me about my noble position, I just absorbed it, and later own throw them in the rash cans.

Another morning has come, another 24 hours of experience and another day to finish unfinished work. This is a day to prove, a new day to judge and can also be a new day to commit sins and correct mistakes. I am blessed by the Lord to live again today, to prove my worth as person and as His servant. This could also be another chance to share love and be loved, to bring inspiration to or neighbors and to touch their heart. A time of gathering new way to change personality. Another day of thinking innovative ideas of the strategies for better living: a chance to discover what happiness really means.

A time to open your eyes; even if you don’t like, a time to get out of bed, even if you don’t think that it is the best idea. A time to wash your face and gargle to remove the bad aura you had in sleep and another chance to clean your teeth. This day is the best time for you to apologize, to put aside your pride and let love reign in your heart. This day can mark your happiest moment in life.

Now I am expecting you to wake and greet the sun that caresses your skin. Open your eyes and greet the cloud that dances in the sky, and listen to the birds that are chirping and enjoy their melody. Shout with Mr. Chicken to inspire other people to the same.

This can be your chance to read the bible, or finish your favorite book. This is also the time for you to study and review your lessons, to bring improvement in your grade. This can be the best chance to decide and dare to succeed. This is the time to scribble your thoughts and put it on paper to inspire others. Most of all this is the best chance of proving to the world that you are something, someone who is more than a mediocre person. The time is now and now is the time, to move to influence and make some change.

If you will not respond to this call today, your 24 hours that could have been your best chance will be vanish since time machine is not yet invented, seconds that had passed will not be brought back. So move even if your mind dictates that you shouldn’t, stretch your muscles and God bless for this busy day my friend

What does happiness means?- Please answer me because I don't know

What makes a person happy? Is it the money in the bank he has or on how many cars he possessed. Does having a lot of girls in your bed can make you happy. Does seeing our enemies fall down can make us happy? These are the questions that disturb me especially when I am frustrated with the turn of events in my life.

Until now I cannot really point what makes me really happy. But there is one thing that I am sure, my friends does not know that I’m good in deriving happiness in simple things. I remember Saturn, a friend, during our sharing in the Youth Encounter Program 4^th batch, when he shared that, he loves to receive letters because, “what’s important with is the thought written on it, because you cant buy it”, he said. Indeed, small things can really amaze me. I think it is because I was living in a poor family.

One of the advantages of being poor is you we’re able to see life in a manner that, simple things can be more fulfilling than those things that can be bought by money. But I am not saying that it is not nice to be born rich, actually I am dreaming to be rich someday. It really makes me happy when I receive cards, that’s why whenever nobody remember to give me presents in my birthday, I always buy a gift for myself- complete with dedication that I make for myself--- and Ivy Palcon, can attest to that.

I have this friend whose name is Ellaine, who during our P. E. 3 was tagged by an engineering student as “mababaw ang kaligayahan”, because she laughs even to those things that are not really comedic in nature. But I envy this girl, because I do not have the talent as much as she has. To you Ellaine , “You must be very thankful to that talent, God Bless!”. Yes maybe people laugh at her being mababaw ang kaligayahan, but being if like that means derivimg real happiness by appreciating simple things I will be honored to be called as such.

If I will be given the the chance or just an hour to touch the the life of a person that, I will make the most out of it, to you my readers, if the chance is yours of helping others, grab it and you will feel the satisfaction that no amount of money can buy.

Thesis Time

This is the time when you a lot of sighs such as, “ wow ubos na ang pera ko”(I have no more money), “Nakakainis ginisa kami ng panelist”(My god, we were roasted by the panelist), and you can also hear sighs of relief such as thank god, “we’re done with our work”, “Kauniti na lang gagraduate na kami yehey”

This time can be the best experience to many and can also be the worst experience to some. This is the time when the things that the student had learned in the classroom for three(3) years in the university will be applied , this is also the time when we can see different faces of people, from happy, to grieving, to flirting face especially with the male professors-to be able to have them as panelist.

Thesis time is a nice experience that the school provides. During this time we can also observe students who act like mini-philosophers and scientists. Thesis is also a nice way of forcing the lazy people to read and research, since students in research cannot just write anything, but fact. I am impressed to those undergraduate students who can clearly discuss and write well their research, it always make me proud that these young minds proves that even if we are just a “bud”, we can be as beautiful as a flower in full bloom”, I mean because of this chance we are able to prove that using our “young minds”, we can compete to those experts by doing our work religiously that s leads to creation of a topnotch product.

But then I am disappointed to some who waste their chance to grab this experience. Some people out of laziness opted not to burn their midnight oil and use the photocopying machine. I mean some just plagiarize to make things easier, although I have to understand that they are doing that for the sake of having good grades, its not just right. Most of all, those who plagiarize does not only bring themselves to shame but also closer to jail.

Moreover despite the tears that had fallen, the sweat that was lost, and the year with incomplete sleep, what makes thesis worth doing for is that after the rain there is a beautiful rainbow that will appear in the sky, that will sculpture some smile in your face. Despite the hardships, what is most fulfilling is to see the hardbound copy displayed in the library, the product of the year without complete rest.

I am what I am

Many people say that they wanted to be like me, because they say that I seem not to have any problem, but I always respond, almost automatically, “ ayos ka lang”(are you alright) and we laugh until our stomach gets a little achy.

Sometimes we try to idolize somebody and want our dreams to be like them, not taking into consideration if the person we admire also wants to be somebody, and I am 95% sure that he is. I also wanted to be another person, especially when I am conflicted with problems, but at the end of the day I always realize that I am so lucky that, I am what I am. But then, idolizing somebody is normal to us, humans. Even the most prominent person in this world, is also a fan. Just like Regine Velasques whom despite her high pedestal in showbusssiness admires a lot of international artists.
Many friends of mine perceive me as a person that is problem free. But the truth is, my life is a basin full of problems, That I don’t to share, not because I don’t want to, but because I want to solve my problems on my own and I am not the kind of person who loves to expose my private lives. I envy those people that can share their thoughts as easy as eating a piece of cake, I was not endowed by that talent. I really love to be like them. To those of you who think they are the person whom I am referring to, my regards.
Moreover, because I believe that all of us has purpose, I never lose hope that someday I will be able to influence other people and touch their lives, and to be an instrument to change their lives for the better, especially those whose hope of living joyfully in this world have vanished. Now that I am thousand miles nearer to my dreams, I will run and reach for it like a horse in a race.

AS of this writing, July 8, 2008, I’m afraid that the one I love will reject when she had said this, “hay naku porke’t ayaw ko sa kanya galit na”, near system plus when our friend bought the CD to be able to save her thesis. But then one thing is for sure, although it will hurt me much if she will reject me, I am sure that there will be no tears that will run into my face. It really pays when you prepared yourself for the worst even if I am expecting for the best.

If there will be no vision ,then it is possible that we have other ways to perceive things and of course if there’s no vision the inventor of eyeglasses will not b e that famous. Moreover if we had no vision then it will be hard for us of distinguishing Joan’s friend from our friends, and their we will have no confusion.
Here is also a possibility that here will be no molecules, relationships among science and environment and other things and phenomena that can be examined since most of these needs careful observation which involves our vision. If there’s no vision the Philippineswill gain no independence because the Katipuneros will not be able to read the “El Fili and Noli Me Tangere”, which had opened there hearts and triggred to fire their nationalistic ideologies.
Paintings, sculptures will not be appreciated because we will not know how beautiful an artwork is, if we don’t know why it is beautiful, and there will be no controversial book, the Da Vinci Code, which for me is a good book, and the church will not worry about many things that concerns their existence, is it not?
Having no vision is a “no-no Argument but as what Freddie Aguilar hadsaid in his song “Bulag Pipi,Bingi”person which does not have vision will be exempted in Earthly sins.

Not all travelers in this world have the power to influence the hearts of people by captivating their soul through his songs. These world are made for all, indeed he had clearly given the new meaning and thrust in communicating in this world.
Each of us has a mission to fulfill, whatever is that mission we must live with and perform our purpose. Although he had lived in this world in such a very short span of time he had attained, as far as my evidences are concerned his purpose. He was able to introduce in the music scene a new genre of music. His music is full of compassion and love not only for one’s work but his love for the country. According to Robert Palmer, “No one in rock and roll has left a musical legacy that matters more or one that matters in such a fundamental ways.” He is simple Bob Marley, the very person appears in almost all the T-shirts and his influence can be seen on the contemporary reggae bands. He may not be the president of an influential country but his influence are continuously seen by many people, he was also the medium to tell to the world the sad fate of his countrymen, and had reached almost all parts of the world
He rocked the world with his style of music, because his legacy had never died in the hearts of many people. He really succeeded to conquer the international music scene with his 10th platinum certificates, signifying sales of more than 10 million.
His care for his country had never perished, not even when he exposed in a healthier environment that offers greener pasture. Fueled by his love of country he has never failed his homeland where poverty is high. No matter what success he had attained he had never forget his fellowmen by giving them service by uplifting their soul, especially that they are confronted with the challenges of everyday life.

This invasion of a person with a Jamaican race in an American country had proved that color is never an obstacle to success but strength and advantageous characteristics. Moreover, he had showed to the world that it’s not impossible to succeed when you know how to dream, and has the ability to be different, and Bob Marley is Rich in this characteristics.
I am thankful with him on how he was able to show indirectly the importance of dreaming big. Marley had shown to the world that of one person can uplift the sad fate of his fellowmen. He had shot the two birds in a shot, while pursuing his careers as a singer and excel on that field, he had also delivered the message of the fate of his countrymen and somehow be the instrument that reminds them that poverty is a valid reason for us not to continue to SMILE and face the world with conviction.
As the song goes,”I shall never pass this way again,” Marley had used his time in a worthwhile way. He may have died early, but then that span of time is enough to tell to the world that, a person’s legacy to help can never stop ones death. He had proved that when you leave worthwhile mark by being the best that you can be you will always be alive not only in books but in the very hearts of every traveler in this world.
